President Obama's Inaugural Address: A Classical Rhetorical Occasion


After the President's Inaugural Address, the presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin was asked if it met the standard set by prior addresses; her reply was that it met it in spirit if not in substance.

  1. Chris Cillizza (from the Fix) articulated my reaction to the speech pretty well. I thought Obama sounded fierce and ready.

  2. I thought it was a brilliant speech. It employed the the familiar tropes of American exceptionalism to convey the very specific policies he alluded to - even down to the "quiet lanes of Newtown" reference at the end. That Obama, he's a clever devil, he is.
